asting notes

A genuinely single vineyard Shiraz from one of our oldest blocks. Our Newlan’s Lane Vineyard sits on Heathcote’s famed ancient red Cambrian soil.

The nose of this wine is full of lush berry fruits, spices, cherries and blackcurrant that mingle seamlessly with dusty French oak. The palate is intense and mouth-filling with soft integrated tannins that build and persist with each mouthful. The 2% Viognier lifts the aromas and aids with structure. The wine is drinking well now, but will continue to gain more complexity with some time in the cellar.

94pts – James Halliday

Vintage report

A hot year, but with a carefully planned watering regime the old vines endured the heatwave in their stride. We managed to avoid any over-ripe or stewed fruit characters despite the heat rising to the high 40′s. Heathcote was fortunate not to be affected by the terrible 2009 bushfires.

Winemaking

All the fruit for this wine was hand harvested and the grapes were fermented in small batches in both closed and open top fermenters. Certain parcels were basket pressed by hand and the wine was aged in high quality French oak barriques (40% new) for 16 months. As is our style, 2% Viognier was co-fermented with the Shiraz for lifted aromatics and added structure.
