Description

Taking its name from the Stock Route which ran along the higher ridges of Terra Rossa soil between Coonawarra and Wrattonbully, this blend is made in the traditional Australian style. Both the Shiraz and Cabernet are sourced from the Hollick Coonawarra and Wrattonbully vineyards. The Wrattonbully vineyard has a similar soil structure to the Coonawarra vineyards which are terra rossa over limestone, and produces flavoursome Shiraz. Coonawarra produces classic Cabernet Sauvignon flavours of mixed berries with an abundance of fine tannins. The combination results in complementary balance of full fruit flavours, balance and structure.

The growing season for the 2011 vintage, saw the breaking of the past decade’s drought. Above average rainfall during winter, and colder spring soil temperatures contributed to a slow bud burst, delivering shorter shoot growth up to flowering in November. Continuous rainfall events over the next two months proved challenging for the vineyard team with healthy vine canopy control the primary focus.

The fruit was picked at earlier maturity than normal, and the resultant alcohol levels are lower. Careful handling in the winery ensured that the vibrant flavours seen in the vineyard are evident in the resultant wine. Eighteen months in a mix of French and American oak barrels has added complexity and texture whilst also allowing a softening of the tannin structure.
